July 28, 2000 — SysAdmin Ted Kekatos announced SysAdmin Day, this year celebrated on July 27.
The struggles that Kekatos faced almost two decades ago are much the same today, fixing niggling problems with endpoints and struggling with printers. With this constant hassle, Ted wanted unsung heroes such as himself to have at least one day of reward, one where there is appreciation and perhaps even a gift or two.
Kekatos got the idea when reading a magazine ad by HP celebrating the fact that a SysAdmin had just installed new printers and was given flowers and gift baskets by his end users. Kekatos had just accomplished the same feat – with the same model printer!
Last year Kaseya decided to celebrate as well, offering gifts and recognition to these unsung heroes with T-shirts and Loot Boxes. We are upping that ante this year and giving away five crates of IT Survival Gear valued at $500. Not only that, but everyone who enters the drawing will get a free SysAdmin Day T-shirt to show off their techie pride.

Some SysAdmin Day Basics
The creator of SysAdmin Day is just as excited now as he was in the summer of 2000 in explaining the concept. “What exactly is SysAdmin Day? Oh, it is only the single greatest 24 hours on the planet … and pretty much the most important holiday of the year. It’s also the perfect opportunity to pay tribute to the heroic men and women who, come rain or shine, prevent disasters, keep IT secure and put out tech fires left and right,” Kekatos enthused.
Gifts are Welcome
One goal of SysAdmin Day is to encourage gift giving. “Your network is secure, your computer is up and running, and your printer is jam-free. Why? Because you’ve got an awesome SysAdmin (or maybe a whole IT department) keeping your business up and running. So say IT loud; say IT proud …,” Kekatos said. “At this point, you may be thinking, ’Great. I get it. My SysAdmin is a rock star. But now what?’ Glad you asked! Proper observation of SysAdmin Day includes (but is not limited to):
Cake & Ice Cream
Words of gratitude
Custom t-shirts celebrating the epic greatness of your SysAdmin
Did I say gifts?”
